I risked nearly failing a very important certification exam today, because I devoted all of Saturday to seeing Radiohead and Sunday to recovering from Radiohead. Since I passed (barely), I am going to think that Radiohead helped me pass.
Seeing Radiohead was absolutely amazing, even life-changing. Remember when Anton Ego took a bite of the ratatouille in that Pixar movie? For me, seeing Radiohead for the first time was similar to that. I"m going to attempt to explain why that was the case.
Going to a Radiohead concert is not just about seeing them perform onstage. It's about waiting in line to see Radiohead, sitting around for Radiohead, meeting hardcore Radiohead fans (Note: Tell them that you're about to see your first Radiohead show and their eyes will light up. You can actually see them remember their first experience), suffering through terrible acts for Radiohead, standing for an entire hour before Radiohead hit the stage just because you were too excited to sit. The almost surreal part is that you're not alone. You're surrounded by people who are going through exactly the same thing and they're all asking themselves the same exact thing: How many more minutes until Radiohead? What is so awesome about seeing the band is this entire experience. That includes all the hours I spent thinking about seeing Radiohead, actually seeing Radiohead, and then reflecting on seeing Radiohead.
Although the line-up at All Points West was pretty weak and the festival itself was way overpriced, I shelled out the money just for Radiohead. I had the privilege of attending the show with some very devoted Radiohead fans, which completely made my experience. I arrived at Liberty State Park shortly before the gates opened. Luckily, the guys that I was with made a run for it, so we ended up being maybe 5-6 people away from the rail (You can spot me in the second to last picture here). I got to the spot around 12:25 pm. I didn't leave that spot until Radiohead left the stage (I'm guessing around 11 pm).
The entire day was just a waiting game. The guys sitting behind us had been chasing Radiohead around on the tour, had seen them six times or something. Stories of rare song performances were exchanged, always including the venue/city/festival, year, and song title. As my friend asked, when was the last time you were this excited about anything? I don't think I've ever shared being this excited about anything with thousands of other people.
My friend had this little black notebook where he kept track of the previous night's incredible setlist (I should have been there. Screw FINRA). Slowly, a wishlist of songs was created and shared with the people around us. Would the list be fulfilled? Time would tell. I'll just add that a guy standing near me most wanted to hear "Kid A." When Radiohead started playing the intro to the song, he looked like he was going to die of happiness. He raised his arms into the air (as if he were rejoicing) before he hugged his friend. Powerful stuff, this Radiohead.
So I suffered through Animal Collective. Shudder. But, it was all worth it when Radiohead took the stage. Oh yea, this was one very serious, respectful crowd. During songs like "Exit Music (For a Film)," the crowd was completely silent. If anyone tried to say anything during such songs, shushing would come from all directions.
The show itself, I wish I could explain in words what it was like. I guess you will just have to experience it for yourself. I definitely see the appeal in going to multiple Radiohead shows. These guys have over a hundred songs, so no two shows are exactly the same. And, it's not like they can play every single song in one set, as much as I wish it were possible. I definitely respect these guys for being able to perform so many of the songs (good memory).
Speaking of good memories...one of the guys I was with could identify most of the songs by the instrument setup, a note, or a beat. I have to tell you, that's an amazing talent.
Now, when I listen to certain songs, I get the same chills that I had when I heard them performed live.
Also, I never realized how much of a badass Jonny Greenwood is. Well, he is a badass. He is an amazing guitarist, and he's always doing so many things at once. My friend said that on Friday night, Jonny was playing the guitar and using the head of the guitar to play the keyboard.

Do yourself a serious favor. Pay the money and see this band. I'm counting down to my next Radiohead concert.

One thing I learned from Chromeo's set was that the duo's name is Chromeo. They repeated their name so many times that it started to become a joke. Just to be annoying, I would ask, "Who is onstage again?" Yes, I may have a crush on Dave 1 and regret not taking any French classes with him, but I was not impressed with Chromeo's set at All Points West. I'm gonna have to agree with Sarah and say that they were a disappointment, even though Dave 1 reps CU. Chromeo was just not meant to play a huge outdoors venue at 2:30 pm, when the hot August sun is beating down on impatient Radiohead fans. I have to admit that it must have been rough for everyone that had been performing on the main stage, because the entire day was pretty much just a slow, (sometimes painful) waiting process for Radiohead fans. The music is pretty catchy, and I probably would have had a better time if I had seen them at night, in a smaller venue, with a few beverages.

Ra Ra Riot - "Too Too Too Fast"
The first time I saw Ra Ra Riot, opening for Tokyo Police Club at Mercury Lounge in Spring '07.
It's about time Ra Ra Riot put out a proper LP. I thought I would be stuck listening to the EP, demos, and live sessions for who knows how long. Not that a lack of a full-length album has been a problem for Ra Ra Riot since they sell out shows regardless. I saw them a couple weeks ago at Siren Music Festival, which made me more excited for the release of The Rhumb Line. These guys had a tough year, losing their drummer John, but they managed to hold it together and produce this awesome song. "St. Peter's Day Festival" is also a favorite of mine, so look out for it when the album is released.
Preorder The Rhumb Line at Insound. The album will be released on August 19. Ra Ra Riot returns to NYC on October 17 with a show at MHOW.

Jamie Lidell - Central Park Summerstage 08.03.08
I know, it's been awhile since I blogged. I tried to see MGMT last weekend at McCarren Pool, and I was completely unsuccessful. It took me ten minutes to find the end of the line. Apparently, arriving thirty minutes early was not early enough. I felt like I was waiting in line for an iPhone. After waiting way too long, I gave up and left. I had already seen these guys, and I didn't feel like waiting in line any longer.
This weekend was more successful (yay!). I've been a little restless without my weekly dose of music, so I was determined to make it to the Jamie Lidell show earlier today. Central Park Summerstage has a great lineup of shows every season, and I was excited to see Jamie Lidell on the bill. Learning my lesson from last week's disaster in Brooklyn, I arrived early and found a spot to sit. I also brought sunscreen, a towel, and face wipes. Did I mention that the summer heat is unkind to me? Oh, and I am also super short. Add a couple hundred people and you end up with one sweaty girl who loves music.
The first thing I realized when I saw Jamie Lidell walking around was that...he didn't look like Jamie Lidell. In fact, he looked like any other alternative dad. He was wearing black, slim trousers and a short-sleeve button-down graphic shirt with a strategically placed hole near the right armpit. Then, he went and changed into navy trousers, cummerbund, and jacket. A near suit sans the shirt. He looked sleek, but the outfit didn't top the one he wore at Pitchfork last year.
Jamie opened with "Another Day" (which I previously blogged about), one of my favorites from his new album, Jim. He had the audience singing backup for him on "A Little Bit More," which he lovingly described as the song that Target exploited. Although I prefer Lidell's up-beat songs, one of the most memorable moments of the show was his performance of "Game for Fools." Jamie is a fantastic, entertaining performer. I enjoy watching him so much that I sometimes forget that he is an amazing vocalist. "Game for Fools" definitely showcases his pipes, and it is even better live because you can visualize the emotions that go along with his lyrics. It is exactly the emotion and passion that Jamie Lidell expresses in his music that continue to make him an artist to care about.

Ra Ra Riot
I survived 90+ degree heat to see Ra Ra Riot and The Dodos. I saw the Dodos back in April and two nights ago (which I'm glad I did because the Dodos' music is best suited for a small, intimate venue), but I hadn't seen Ra Ra Riot since they opened for Tokyo Police Club at Mercury Lounge back in the spring of '07. After that show, I couldn't stop playing "Each Year" on my iTunes.
Ra Ra Riot is a great live act, and it is no wonder that they are gaining a lot of hype without even releasing a full-length album (The Rhumb Line is due on August 19). I wanted to catch them at the Bowery Ballroom this past spring, but I waited too long to buy tickets and the show sold out. This band has a lot of energy, and I always have a lot of fun watching them perform. The string instruments definitely add a refreshing classical influence to Ra Ra Riot's music.
I'm going to go nurse my sunburnt face now... Even though I was in ridiculous heat while I was traveling, the weather at Siren was especially unbearable. I wanted to stay for Broken Social Scene, but I just couldn't stand the heat of the sun and crowd anymore. Needless to say, there was even less dancing than I would usually expect at a New York show. I definitely prefer the crowd at Pitchfork Music Festival, but my friend told me that the Saturday was rainy, humid, muddy, and overall very unpleasant.

The Acorn
Not too long ago, I stumbled upon The Acorn's name in SPIN magazine. Yes, I have a subscription to SPIN. It came free with my ticket to All Points West. Although most of the magazine is erm...not very good, I do like this one section where writers recommend new acts that are supposedly under the radar. And there was The Acorn.
From Ottawa, The Acorn released their first LP earlier this year in the States. Glory Hope Mountain is an artfully formulated concept album that is based on the life of Rolf Klausener's mother, Gloria Esperanza Montoya (Get the connection?). When a friend asked me to describe the album, I initially described it as being soothing. This album was perfect to listen to while I was studying for an exam. While the music is great to work to, it's interesting enough to keep me awake, which is a plus. I do admit that I am a bit biased when it comes to indie folk (I sorta love it), but something about this band stands out to me. Maybe it's the influence of Honduran percussion and rhythms, but I dig it.

Edit: I just listened to some of EP today and it's awesome. The countdown begins.
Hailing from the non-Brooklyn city of Boston, Passion Pit was introduced to me by someone who sits a couple seats away from me every day and not by choice (Thanks, Nick!). I wish I could recall the exact words he used to describe Passion Pit, but all I remember is MGMT meets ... 5-6 other bands. The five-piece Passion Pit, led by Michael Angelakos, was recently picked up by Frenchkiss Records, home to The Dodos, Les Savy Fav, and The Hold Steady. They've also opened for Girl Talk, so they have something in common with Tay Zonday of "Chocolate Rain" fame. I haven't heard that much yet, but I'm curious to hear more.
Chunk of Change EP is due on September 16, and an LP is to be expected in early 2009.

The Black Ghosts - "It's Your Touch"

Simian's Simon Lord (vocals on Simian Mobile Disco's "I Believe") and The Wiseguys' Theo Keating come together as The Black Ghosts to bring you "It's Your Touch." I'm normally not a big fan of electropop, or pop in general, but there's something very soothing about this song. The first song of the Black Ghosts that I had heard was "Any Way You Choose To Give It" (through SXSW). I'm not really a fan of this song, so I was surprised to find this track playing on my iTunes the other day...

This track off LP3 is awesome. It's been replaying in my head throughout the day. I really dig the 8-bit sounds. Ratatat's show at MHOW next week is sold out, but the duo is returning to New York on September 27. Tickets are currently on sale for the Terminal 5 show.

Yes, you probably get it by now. I REALLY like Fleet Foxes. After my blog post on the Sun Giant EP and my near verbal diarrhea (or truth, as I'd like to call it) about the last time they performed at Bowery Ballroom, it seems that I really like to talk about this band. Well, that's because they're awesome and their show tonight reiterated the fact.
I was so excited to see Fleet Foxes return to New York as a headlining act. So excited that I purchased tickets the week they went on sale, which turned out to be a good move on my part. Tickets sold out not too long ago for this show, and I saw tickets going for $50-60 a pop on Craigslist. Maybe it had to do with the Pitchfork review of the LP. But, you know, just a guess.
I arrived early, not too long after doors opened. Somehow, I had this feeling that people would be filling the venue early. Another good move. Before the opening act walked on-stage, the place was already half-packed. This is pretty much unheard of at Bowery Ballroom, but I guess the audience knew what was up; arrive early and snatch a good spot for the main act.
Like at the last Bowery show, Robin was ill. This time, I think he was even sicker. He was hacking away in between lines of song. Honestly, I had this look of grave concern on my face during the entire set. Robin announced that this would be the day that he would quit smoking. QUIT SMOKING??? ROBIN, WHY ARE YOU SMOKING IN THE FIRST PLACE??? I am completely flabbergasted. That voice needs maintenance and preservation. Robin, I think you made the right decision. The next time I see you perform, I don't want to see you coughing like you're going to die. In fact, it seemed like other members could have also been sick. A sick Fleet Foxes sounded amazing, but I'm curious to experience a healthy Fleet Foxes.
In the first picture above, you can catch a glimpse of Fleet Foxes' new member. When I first heard the news, I assumed that six people would be performing on stage. However, it seems that J. Tillman is taking over as the drummer for their current tour.
Like my friend said after the show, Fleet Foxes' music was meant to be experienced live. Do yourself a favor and check out this band. People have different opinions on Fleet Foxes' use of reverb on their recorded albums, but the live shows are simply good. I'm going to be completely sleep-deprived and exhausted at work tomorrow, but it was well worth it.

I want a screwdriver capo like Lee Ranaldo's. Although, according to the Sonic Youth website, it's not exactly used as a capo.
Screwdriver -- placed under the strings behind a specific fret, a screwdriver helps construct Lee's guitar parts on "Confusion is Next" "The World Looks Red" "Early American" "I Love Her All The Time" and "Flower".
Drumstick used on the guitar is also cool. I can only hope that I will be as cool as Sonic Youth for the rest of my days.

Beck - "Orphans"
Sure, the general public tends to think that Scientologists are a bit, well, insane. That doesn't make me stop listening to them...or at least to their music.
Beck returns with his new full-length album, Modern Guilt. "Orphans" is one of the two songs that feature Cat Power. The song isn't quite as charming as some of his past songs, but I can't help wanting to hear it over and over again. And seeing as I acquired the album earlier today, I think it deserves a short post.
Modern Guilt will be released on July 8 in North America (Preorder here!). Beck is currently on tour in Europe and will be returning to North America in August.

Sigur Rós - "Gobbledigook"

Yes, I am still alive.
Today, I officially joined the workforce, leaving behind my carefree days of youth. Overdramatic? Perhaps.
Although my employee training is somewhat painful, music like "Gobbledigook" manages to put a smile on my face during my early morning commute. I haven't listened to the new Sigur Rós album in its entirety, but I really dig this song.
Sigur Rós announced a full North American tour not too long ago. I missed them once this summer while I was traveling overseas. Looks like I'm going to miss them again, since they're playing on weekdays. Although I'm disappointed, I'm not a fan of the United Palace Theatre.
Thoughts on the new album? Been to a Sigur Rós show recently?

Chairlift - Bowery Ballroom 05.18.08
This post definitely deserves much more depth. Alas, I have no time and I am going to be MIA for a month.
Not too long ago, I blogged about an awesome song by Chairlift. Now that I have discovered more of their songs (Thanks, David!) and have finally seen them live, I am completely hooked. And you will be too.
With so many bands based in Brooklyn, it's hard to keep up with the scene. Thinking back to the obscure acts I've seen this year, I realize that so many bands are just not good (Just because you can play instruments doesn't mean you have to share your bad music with other people). Also, it's such a stereotype for a band to be based in Brooklyn. Whenever I go to a band's MySpace and see that they're from Brooklyn, I chuckle to myself because OF COURSE this new, obscure indie band is from Brooklyn. It's almost a running joke. But, then I discover a band like Chairlift and I stop drinking the Brooklyn haterade.
Chairlift is definitely one of the most exciting acts that I've listened to this year. I normally don't like female vocalists, but I dig Caroline's voice and she sounds incredible live. Unlike many other acts, Chairlift is not a one-hit wonder. During the Bowery show, I kept on saying, "Oh yea, I like this song." But, I said that for every song that I recognized. Although most of Chairlift's music has a psychedelic vibe, the variety and originality of the songs keep me engaged. If you think "Evident Utensil" is awesome, wait until you hear the other stuff.
For an early opening act, there were a fair number of people who made it out to the Bowery for Chairlift. This makes me think that more people are starting to follow this band. As they should! I wish I could share more of Chairlift's music with you. It really just speaks for itself. Alas, you will have to wait for the release of their LP.
From looking at their MySpace, it seems like their upcoming LP is titled Does You Inspire You. Word is that the LP will be released sometime this summer. From what I've heard, the LP is going to be well worth the wait. "Deer Hunt" and "Planet Health" are my current favorites.

Cut Copy - Bowery Ballroom 05.14.08
I've been looking forward to this show since I missed them in March. I was smart to buy tickets immediately after the show was announced, because tickets sold out quickly and rightfully so. You can pretty much deduce from listening to the music that Cut Copy would put on a fun, energetic show. They do not disappoint.
Right before Cut Copy went on, I lost my right contact. So, I was pretty much blind for the entire set. Even though I couldn't see that well, the lights and music were still on my mind (hardy har har). The band kept encouraging the crowd to dance with them, and people actually uncrossed their arms and jumped around. I saw a few guys wearing 3D glasses. You can see the effect here. I may have pointed and laughed at them at the show but in retrospect, I wish I had a pair with me.
It seems like there is some controversy involving a possibly lip-synching lead singer. Did anyone notice that? I don't remember if the music sounded recorded, and I certainly could not see well enough to make out that detail.
Cut Copy played most of their new album, In Ghost Colours with a few old favorites from Bright Like Neon Love. When people were yelling out the names of songs, I obnoxiously yelled out, "PLAY THEM ALL!" The lead singer responded," Yes, we will play them all. Every single one." Or something to that effect. Alas, they lied. Still, I loved their selection of songs from Bright Like Neon Love, especially "Times Stands Still." I just wish they would have performed all of the new album, which is one of the most danceable records. Cut Copy doesn't even need any stage banter, which was very minimal. Their music and use of flashing lights is more than enough to get everyone's attention.

Sometimes, I don't even realize what songs I listen to the most often. After finally joining big-brother Last.fm, I'm seeing that I listen to My Morning Jacket's "Evil Urges" a lot. In fact, I've been listening to it every day for the past few weeks. Even though I should be writing my final papers right now, I figured I could share this one with you. Plus a couple more.

The Teenagers - Bowery Ballroom 05.05.08
To state the obvious, The Teenagers are really French. I usually describe The Teenagers as a cruder, French version of Art Brut, another band that features spoken words instead of actual vocals. If you've listened to any of The Teenagers' music, you've probably found that they are not very serious. Well, The Teenagers didn't start out as a real band; they formed as a joke. They wrote a song based on the comments on their MySpace, and a label thought they were good enough to sign on. Note to self: Create fake band and become indie-famous.
I had watched enough youTube videos to know what to expect from the live show: three French guys playing absurd songs. Dorian on guitar and Michael on bass, both completely stoic and expressionless. Quentin, swinging his hips around as he spoke the lines. They could only get away with it because they were French. And we were les Américains.
It was obvious by this Bowery Ballroom show that The Teenagers have a huge female fanbase. Maybe it's the band's French charm, but there were definitely more crazy girls than I'm used to seeing. For the performance of "Homecoming," Quentin (lead singer/speaker) invited a gaggle of overexcited girls onto the stage. Some of them may have refused to let go to Quentin's hand after he helped them onto the stage. I know that "Homecoming" is a joke song, but I would never publicly perform the female part of that song in front of hundreds of strangers. Although the song is meant to be ironic, there is still something degrading about it (If you've listened to the song, you would know what I'm talking about). Out of set, my favorite was "Starlett Johansson," probably because that's my favorite song overall. My friend was reading the setlist and told me that they were playing "Starlett" next. So, being the smart person that I am, I started yelling out, "Starlett! Starlett!" Quentin turned to me and said, "You want Starlett? Then you will have it." Or something to that extent. Also, my friend and I talked to Dorian after the show. It turns out that Dorian is Korean-French! No wonder he's so cool.
